Amanda Dowler

Surrey UK

Surrey Police has been undertaking extensive searches for missing Walton Schoolgirl, Amanda Dowler, who failed to return home after school on 21 March. Police are treating the case as a critical incident and are still keeping an open mind as to the reasons for Amanda’s disappearance. Police are following all lines of enquiries and are not discounting any options whatsoever at this stage.

Over 250 tapes of CCTV footage have been seized from various locations, in particular CCTV from a nearby business premises which has been constantly examined and re-examined and has been crucial to the investigation. This footage is a key piece of evidence showing what was going on in the road at that time, although the quality of it is variable, particularly where the camera is looking into the sun. This crucial video has been sent to the FBI for examination. It is hoped that the FBI labs will be able to remove the glare from the sun and enhance the images.

It was hoped that a 'Birds Eye' CCTV camera which takes panoramic shots of Station Avenue, would reveal Amanda and her abudcutors. But Amanda failed to appear on the camera which recorded the area 50 yards from the station. For this reason police believe Amanda was taken within 60 seconds of stepping off the station platform where she was last seen by friends and CCTV.

Amanda Dowler vanished on the afternoon of March 21 on her way home from school. She was last seen stepping out of the railway station at 4.08pm after sharing a portion of chips with some friends in the café on the platform. Another friend waiting for the bus opposite saw her leave for home - a half mile away. Moments later she had disappeared.

Surrey Police are currently trying to trace possible witnesses who were caught on CCTV at the time of Amanda's disappearance.

Surrey Police still needs help from anyone with any information. In particular they want to know:

Has anyone been behaving differently since 21 March?

Has anyone suddenly moved out of Walton and surrounding areas, been keen to quickly get rid of a car?

Has anyone you know received an injury or been keen to dispose of or suddenly wash their clothes around 21 March?

Detective Chief Superintendent Craig Denholm, who has been in charge of the investigation from its outset, said:

"I ask anyone with any information, or who may be aware of someone whose behaviour around the end of March makes them suspicious, or who thinks it could be them on the CCTV we are releasing, to contact us on 01372 471212."
