Officers forced their way into a loft apartment and found two young sisters who had been shot to death, police said.
Authorities detained two people for questioning after discovering the bodies of Liberty Battaglia, 6, and Faith Battaglia, 9, on Wednesday in their father's apartment, said police Sgt. Filiberto X. Carrillo.
Police didn't say who was taken into custody, but one suspect was the driver of a pickup that matched the description of the vehicle owned by John David Battaglia, the victims' father.
Mary Jean Pearle, the girls' mother, was on the phone with Battaglia from her home when she heard five shots fired about 7:30 p.m., police said. The shots followed an argument between Battaglia and Pearle, police said.
Pearle heard one of the girls say, "No, Daddy, no, Daddy, no," before the mother heard gunshots, a relative said. The parents have been divorced for about a year.
The children had been visiting their father.
Officers found numerous guns and rifles in the loft.
