South African Serial Killer - 41 Victims and Rising

Posted by buffy on: Wednesday 6 June 2001

More bodies are being discovered as South African police continue with investigations into the worst serial killing the country has ever seen. A little over two weeks ago the body count stood at 1. In a week that number rose to 38. Today it stands at 41 as David Simelane continues to lead police to his victims.

The 40 year old suspect, David Simelane, was brought to the attention of the police after a man whose wife had disappeared reported that she was last seen with the suspect. The woman's badly decomposed body was later found in a plantation.

Police say that the suspect has been extremely co-operative since in custody, particularly with the forensic investigations. Initially he indicated that investigators should continue searching the forests in the southwest of the country for more bodies.

Following Simelane's advice, police uncovered the remains of 26 women and three children. A week later, Simeland disclosed the the location of four more bodies, all women, found in a forest in the southwest corner of the country.

Once again, just two days ago, Simelane made more disclosures. This time the police were led to the bodies of three women, two in a forest and one in a small town. All were badly decomposed.

Despite pleading guilty to 33 counts, the death toll which Simelane now stands accountable for has reached 41. Already Swaziland's worst known serial killer, Simelane continues to lead police to more mutilated bodies buried by him in shallow graves throughout the country.

Strangled in various forests in the southwest region, all of the bodies have been beheaded. Forensic evidence shows that many of the women were raped.

Twenty Eight of the bodies were dumped at the same location, a pine forest in Malkerns. The others were discovered in various areas of Macetijeni.

Police suspect that Simelane may have had a number of accomplices. Several business men are being questioned in connection.

Currently police say the motive for the killings is unclear.
