The Puerto Rico compensation program is the nation's newest, beginning operation in 1998. Residents of other U.S. states are eligible for benefits for crimes occurring in Puerto Rico.

FUNDING
The program receives an annual appropriation, and special fees of $100 per misdemeanor and $300 per felony. VOCA grant funds will soon be available
ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS
Reporting period: 72 hours, except for just cause
Filing period: 6 months
The program covers crimes that occurred after Ju1y, 1998.
PROCEDURES
The program director and claims technicians investigate and document the application, and the director makes eligibility decisions. Appeals: Applicant may seek reconsideration of the director's decision with the attorney general. The appellate court in Puerto Rico may review this decision

Maximum award: $3,000 per person, $5,000 per family
