Can person with borderline personality disorder become a serial killer?

I just noticed your post in this section.

Interesting question. My immediate reaction was, sure. Any type of personality disorder could become a serial killer. Serial killers are a very diverse group. But, I thought it would be interesting to run some BRACE Character Profile correlations of some serial killers with the profile of a prototypical Borderline Personality Disorder.

First, it is important to note that, based on the BRACE Character Profile, the DSM-IV-TR Borderline Personality Disorder is positively correlated with Histrionic Personality Disorder (r = +0.49), Asperger’s Disorder (r = +0.37), Schizoid Personality Disorder (r = +0.26), Avoidant Personality Disorder (r = +0.22), and Dependent Personality Disorder (r = +0.19).

But, it is the significant negative correlations that are most important related to your question. Significant negative correlations include Antisocial Personality Disorder (r = -0.30) and Paranoid Personality Disorder (r = -0.24). Also, there is no significant correlation with a prototypical Hare PCL-R (r = +0.06) and no significant correlation with Narcissistic Personality Disorder (r = +0.16). Most serial killers display cognitive-behavioral-existential characteristics which correlate positively with some combination of the characteristics of Paranoid Personality Disorder, Antisocial Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder or a prototypical 40-point Hare PCL-R.

When I ran a comparison with Borderline Personality Disorder, the following were significantly negatively correlated: Ted Kaczynski (the Unabomber), Eric Rudolph, Dennis Lynn Rader (BTK), spy Robert Philip Hanssen, Graham Young, Kuklinski (the Iceman), and Zodiac. There were also significant negative correlations with the fictional characters Michael Myers and Dr. Hannibal Lecter.

I did find significant positive correlations with Jeffrey Dahmer in the Existential/Motivational domain and an overall significant positive correlation with serial Killer Joel Rifkin. Both of these serial killers have characteristics in common with Asperger’s Disorder. These are interesting findings ... hope they are responsive to your question.
